The brief
GetTheTan is a Glasgow sunbed-cream brand, run by the team behind the Beautano salon. The products have real personality: a rainbow neon sign on the salon wall, holographic sunset labels, names like Banana Tingle and Watermelon Wand. The website had none of it. It ran on a stock Shopify template with the demo text still showing, and it was slow. The brand on the shelf and the brand on the screen were two different things.
The challenge
Two problems at once. The design ignored the brand, so the site looked cheaper than the products. And under the hood it was slow and thin: the largest element took over thirteen seconds to appear, product pages were little more than a title and a price, and some of the old copy made health claims that are not allowed for sunbed products in the UK. It needed to look the part, load fast, and be safe to sell from.
What we built
We built a bespoke Shopify theme, drawn from the brand’s own salon and packaging rather than a template: a dark, warm design with the sunset gradient used with restraint and every product colour-coded to its fruit. Underneath it we built a structured product system on Shopify metafields, so each product carries its own facts, how-to steps and FAQs, marked up for Google and AI search. Then we reworked the whole catalogue and content for the searches that matter, and stripped out the non-compliant claims.
- Built a bespoke Shopify theme to replace the stock template, drawn from the brand’s own salon and packaging
- Cut largest-contentful-paint from 13.5 seconds to 1.2, scoring 97 on PageSpeed
- Built a structured product system on metafields: facts, how-to and FAQ schema on every product
- Reworked the whole catalogue and content for search, and removed non-compliant health claims
The result
The largest-contentful-paint dropped from 13.5 seconds to 1.2, and the site now scores 97 on PageSpeed. More importantly it finally looks like the brand it is selling, product pages actually answer the questions customers ask, and the store is clean of the claims that could have caused it trouble. The owner runs it themselves, and it is built to be found. A stock template turned into a site a customer would happily buy from.
